If we’ve learned anything in Productive Corporation’s seventeen years as a company, it’s that we not all products are made equal. While we try to provide mid-size business with a range of products so they can choose what is right for them we’d be lying if we said we didn’t pick favorites that we then highlight in our bi-weekly live webinar series.

After all, our own business depends on the very products we recommend, from Sophos’ anti-ransomware add-on Intercept X to its Synchronized Security and next-gen endpoint to Kasperksy KSV to the many others that we’ve featured on our YouTube channel over the years.

One product that we likely don’t have to recommend to many of you reading this is CCleaner’s free cleaning product, of which there has been over one billion downloads! Of course, just because a product is popular is by no means an indication of whether it’s the right solution for your environment. Nonetheless, there is no equivalent to CCleaner on the market and thus most organizations utilize as a means to augment their endpoint security and best practices.

On-Prem vs. Cloudless Corporate Editions

There are two primary versions of the centrally managed CCleaner product, cloudless or on-prem. Unlike the on-prem edition, CCleaner Cloud empowers you to make the product available to your end users. Following our conversation about Least Privileged Access, when it comes to granting users permissions this is not something we exactly recommend.

That said, you may prefer at least having the option as opposed to on-prem version in which there is nothing you nor the end user can do from the endpoint as it must be controlled via the management console.

In terms of CCleaner Cloud’s management console, it provides a lot of the features that you’ve likely worked with before if you’ve downloaded the free version in terms of what can be scanned in, cleaned, and how the Defraggler works. You can download or create a package for another machine right from the management console.

One smart thing to do when creating a package for another machine is to have the installer expire to ensure that you’re always downloading the latest version of the product. Or if you want to put it on a thumb drive or network share to push it to your users, you can also set it to unlimited download with unlimited time and send it via an email attachment. Other ways that we’ve seen clients push out the latest version of CCleaner to their users is to take advantage of a GPO push-out or PDQ deploy.

Within the management console, you can click through the different machines you have installed on the CCleaner console and select the ones on which you wish to run a scan that shouldn’t take more than four-to-six seconds and identify the data that can be removed. You can drill into the scan report once it’s complete in greater detail and sort the items by size and file description.

If you’ve used the free version already, you likely have a preferred methodology in terms of how you scan a machine, which you can simply copy over. Or if you’re starting fresh, you can determine what exactly you want to clean by going through and selecting the different applications and elements you want cleaned.

What to Clean with CCleaner Cloud

With Microsoft 2016, the program creates a lot of overhead and thus clearing out your cache for the past year is one way to free up memory. But if you’re like our own VP of Sales & Technology Pete Greco and have some frequently-used documents you don’t wish to lose, you can free up space some other time-tested way.

For instance, if you utilize a password manager so that you don’t save any passwords in your browser, which are then ripe for theft, you can go a long way in freeing up space by compacting your browser databases and clearing out your saved passwords. There’s also significant menu order cache to clear out from your Windows system to make for a faster Windows experienc that you can access from the Advanced Section.

Ultimately, the key is to balance efficiency with user experience and if your users demand the best performance possible, then checking as many of the boxes as possibly will result in improved performance. That said, certain applications like Adobe Creative suite create documents in random place so if you see temporary files being created in the non-temp folder, you can set up some detailed custom areas, allowing you to get rid of junk or garbage being spit out by an application.

After The Scan

Of course, while some admins simply run a CCLeaner scan and leave it at that, you want to do an analysis to see what should have been skipped or cookies to be whitelisted in the future. You can exclude and include specific things, but one benefit of the on-prem or CCleaner Cloud editions over the free version is that you can clean all user profiles unlike the free version where you must be logged in, which isn’t doing much to speed up a user’s profile.

Additionally, CCleaner Cloud makes a back-up of the registry to your local machine in case something goes awry and you need to recover the data you wiped. One trick that took as a second to figure out but that we now recommend especially to our school clients is after you’ve set up one machine and are ready to start setting up the rest, you can simply add the policies you’ve created from one machine to another by selecting the machine from the list and configure its rules and settings. This way, many schools set up their machines to run CCleaner upon booting up since it takes so little time, returning each machine to an excellent running state.

Additional Benefits Exclusive to CCleaner Cloud

With a program as essential to an organization’s security and improving system operations, there’s obviously quite a bit to cover. But in addition to the above tricks and tips, here are some additional features to consider when choosing between CCleaner Cloud and the on-prem product.

  • Remote access allowing admins to check machines and help employees working from to improve bandwidth and memory.
  • Get a complete, detailed inventory of all of your hardware and find out any piece of information about a machine.
  • Drill down into each machine and select which patches to run, especially if you are lacking a full patch management solution.

Lastly, one plus of using the on-prem product to keep in mind is that while CCleaner cloud cannot automatically sync with Active Directory, but you can do so via the on-prem edition.

Of course, if you’re having issues setting up CCleaner to best suit your specific needs or simply want to ask us some questions, don’t hesitate to Contact us and one of our sales reps will shortly be in touch to help you with your CCleaner Cloud and on-prem questions.
